Are You Allowed to Get Your Clip on Hair Extensions Wet?
August 04, 2024

Once you have paid for your clip-on hair extensions, you can do whatever you want to do with them. And yes, you are allowed to get them wet as they are yours. However, the main question really is what happens if they get wet. Is it safe to wear them when you are in a pool?
What are the Risks of Getting Your Clip On Hair Extensions Wet?
It really depends on what kind of fiber the extensions are made of. If they are made of synthetic hair, then they get damaged by water. Synthetic fibers may lose their shape, texture, and overall integrity if you expose them to moisture. Exposing them to water can make them frizzy or tangled. They could even melt if exposed to high temperatures.
Human Hair Extensions
On the other hand, if you are wearing extensions made from human hair, you may think that it is safe with no risks. Human hair is indeed more resilient than synthetic hair. But always remember that it is still prone to damage from excessive moisture. Water can still cause the hair to swell. It weakens the bonds within the clip-on clips. It can lead to shedding or reduced lifespan.
Furthermore, the clips used to attach the extensions are made of metal or plastic. If you expose them to water for a long period, it can lead to deterioration of the clips. In other words, the clips will become less effective at holding the extensions securely in place.

How to Handle Moisture with Clip-On Extensions?
Avoid Exposing Them to Water
In that case, it is best to keep them away from excessive moisture. In other words, you should not get them wet during activities like swimming or washing your face. If you need to go to the pool and swim, just remove them.
Clean Them
When cleaning the extensions, you do not have to soak them in water. Instead, you should only do spot cleaning. You can do so by using a damp cloth or a spray designed for hair expansions. This is sufficient to clean any areas that may have accumulated product buildup or dirt.
Dry Then Properly
Now, if you were pushed to the pool or if you accidentally get them wet for whatever reason, just pat them dry with a soft towel. Do not rub or wring them. If you do so, then they will suffer from tangling. Let them air dry completely. Do not reattach them to your natural hair without first drying them out.
Use Specific Products
When you clean your extensions, make sure that you only use products designed for these accessories. In this way, you can be sure that they are gentle on your hair. They also help maintain the quality and appearance of the hair extensions.
Store Them Properly
If you are not using them, do not just place them on your drawer or table. Instead, invest in a wig stand so they are always in good condition. Having a wig stand or a storage bag will prevent them from becoming tangled or damaged.
