How Long Do Human Hair Wigs Last?

November 30, 2021

Human Hair Wigs

There’s no definite answer for how long human hair wigs last. But compared to synthetic wigs, human hair wigs do last longer because they’re not chemically processed. With their cuticles still intact and proper care, you can expect them to last for over a year. If you don’t wear them daily, though, they can last up to three years.

How to Make Human Hair Wigs Last Longer?

How you treat the wigs can determine how they last. You must treat them with care while wearing them. You must also store them properly to ensure their longevity. Here are some tips you can do to ensure the human hair wigs will last longer than expected.

Wash Carefully

You must follow the instructions provided by the wig’s manufacturer. Generally, you need to wash it with extra attention.

  • De-tangle it with your fingers or a wig brush
  • Soak it under lukewarm water
  • Shampoo it
  • Rinse it off by running the wig under the tap and letting the shampoo fall off of the wig.
  • Condition it and rinse it away
  • Dry it by squeezing the wig with your hands. Start from the top and make your way down.
  • Place the wig onto a wig stand to let it dry fully

Style the Wig When Damp

When styling the wig without ruining it, you need to do it when damp to prevent the hair from becoming too brittle. For instance, if you wish to put rollers in the hair, make sure that it’s still wet.

Use Styling Production at a Low Temperature

If you need to use wig styling products, like curlers or hair straighteners, you need to use them at a low temperature. Then, add a heat protection spray and don’t use them near the roots of the human hair wig.

Blow-Dry with Caution

The hair strands of the human hair wigs are tied to the cap. Thus, if you need to use a hairdryer, make sure that you use it with caution. Don’t overuse it because the knots can become loose resulting in human hair shedding.

Avoid Washing Wigs Too Often

Remember that if you wash it often, its lifespan tends to shorten. That’s why it’s ideal to just wash them every 6 to 8 weeks. You can decide whether it’s time to wash it before you wear it.

Store It Properly

Besides washing, how you store the wigs will also affect their lifespan. The proper storage technique is to ensure that the wig is out of direct sunlight. Then, you shouldn’t just place the wigs somewhere. Make sure to put it on a wig head, if you have any, to retain its shape. Then, the storage space must be cool or dry to make sure that the hair fibers won’t break down.
