Whether you wear your wig on a daily basis or out for a special event, it’s important to clean and maintain your human hair wig in order to preserve the condition and longevity of your unit.

As with human hair, your extensions must be properly treated with high-quality shampoo and conditioner. Wig care products provide moisture to the wig and will help to reduce damage, promote volume, and increase the silkiness and shine factor.

The recommended time frame for washing and conditioning your human hair wig is between 6 to 8 days of continuous wear. Although your wig should not be washed more than necessary, a regular wash schedule should be followed to keep your wig unit in tip-top condition.

Pro Tip: Wearing a wig cap underneath your hair extensions will also help to extend the lifespan of your wig. The cap helps to keep scalp oils away from the base of your wig.

Step One: Prepare & Detangle

The tools that will be needed in order to clean and care for your human hair wig will be a wide tooth wig comb, high-quality wig shampoo and conditioner, a wig stand, towels, and any styling tools you require afterward. High-quality tools and accessories to help care for your human hair wigs are essential to extending the life of your unit.

It is very important to carefully finger detangle the hair extensions first. The wide tooth wig comb can then be used to gently untangle the extensions in order to get rid of any teasing or knots prior to washing.

Step Two: Wet your Human Hair Wig

Hold the human hair wig in a sink or basin under cool running water. Gently run your fingers through the wig to ensure that the water has been distributed from the crown to the ends of the hair extensions. When cleansing curly human hair wigs, take extra care when detangling. Ensure that the wig is being held so that the water is not causing any additional tangles and knots. For longer styles, hold the wig underneath a showerhead so that the hair can flow with the water as it runs the length of the strands.

Step Three: Shampoo

Use a quarter-sized amount of human hair wig shampoo while making sure that the hair is being washed in the downward motion. Avoid rubbing, wring, or massaging the wig as this may cause tangles. Also, avoid using any circular motions as this will add tangles throughout the hair and could damage the unit.

After shampooing, ensure that you rinse the wig until the water runs clear and all excess shampoo has been removed. After thoroughly rinsing the wig, gently squeeze the water from the hair extensions.

Step Four: Conditioning

Conditioning your human hair wig is essential to adding moisture and volume. While the hair is still damp, spread a generous amount of conditioner to the hair avoiding the base of the wig. While the hair is saturated in conditioner, gently finger detangle your wig, starting from the tips working your way up to the crown. Work the conditioner through the ends of the hair for about 3 to 5 minutes.

Pro Tip: Using your fingers as you detangle will help to gently clear any knots that have developed so far. Avoid stretching or pulling the hair extensions.

Step Five: Rinse

While holding your wig upright, rinse the conditioner from the hair with cool running water. Do this until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze the excess water from the wig while avoiding twisting or wringing the hair.

Step Six: Dry

Wrap the hair extensions in a towel and gently pat to remove the excess water. Refrain from brushing at this point to keep from damaging the unit. Set your human hair wig on a wig stand to air dry. Allow your unit to completely dry prior to using any heated styling tools.

Step Seven: Style and Store

After the wig has fully dried, it is best to use heat styling tools with digital temperature gauges so that you can properly control the heat settings. A best practice is to ensure that the heat is not turned up so much so that it damages the strands. Spray heat protectant onto each section of the wig prior to using the styling tools in order to protect the hair extensions.

Pro Tip: Continue to go through these steps to extend the life of your wigs and remember to wash every 6 to 8 weeks.

A scheduled wash and care cycle is best when wearing a human hair wig daily so that the wig can remain beautiful and last longer.

Show your wig some love and it will love you right back!
