What to Avoid With Hair Extensions
November 16, 2022
We carry several products, including clip-ins, hair weaves, and fusions in different lengths and textures. But there are certain precautions to keep in mind, regardless if you're a veteran or this is your first order. Here's what to avoid, so you don't end up with brittle, dry, and damaged hair extensions.
Avoid Placing Your Extensions Too High
Avoid placing clip-in hair extensions higher than your eyebrow, as it can create an unnatural look. Instead, clip your products as close to your roots as you can. On the flip side, you can clip front-facing wefts a little bit higher up.
Don't Use Excessive Heat
You can curl, straighten, diffuse, and style these products in several different ways. But be sure to avoid excessive heat with clip-in products. Too much heat can cause damage and make your products brittle, dry, or damaged. Instead, you'll want to use equipment with heat controls and aim for light to medium settings.
Anything below 375 degrees should be okay, but follow all of the package's guidelines for the most accurate information possible.
Stay Away From Volumizing or Clarifying Shampoo
Clip-in products do not receive natural oils from your scalp like traditional hair. These products aren't as hydrated, and "volumizing" or "clarifying" products will strip any natural oils from your hair extensions.
Instead, use moisturizing shampoos and hydrating conditioners specifically made for your products. Using these products will keep your accessories clean and prolong their lifespan.
Don't Overwash Your Hair Extensions!
Overwashing is another mistake to avoid when it comes to clip-in products. Overwashing your accessories can dry them and break and turn it brittle . These products don't receive the same natural oils as traditional hair. Instead, follow your package's guidelines for washing instructions and recommendations.
Don't Fall Asleep With Clip-Ins!
Another way to cause damage to your hair accessories is to wear them to bed. When you sleep, you may toss and turn, which can cause your hair accessories to tug and break. You may wake up with hair breakage or damaged extensions. Instead, remove any hair accessories before bed and follow the item's guidelines for the best results.
Don't Wear Them to the Pool or Beach
You may be tempted to wear your luscious clip-ins to the beach or pool. However, this can be detrimental if you aren't careful. Your accessories have a higher risk of being tangled and damaged. The salt from the ocean or chlorine from the pool can also cause your accessories to become dry, brittle, or damaged. It's best to keep your products at home and save them for different occasions.
Avoid Bleach and Hair Dye
Although some hair extensions are dye-friendly, it's best to avoid dying and bleaching to prolong the lifespan of your accessories. Hair extensions are chemically treated ahead of time, so additional bleach can cause them to become brittle or dry. If you want to dye your extensions, make sure you're using the right products and follow all manufacturer instructions.
